Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S. It is designed to help women with small or unevenly-sized breasts obtain a fuller, better-proportioned look through the placement of implants in the breast. Implants are placed either above or below the muscles of the chest wall through a variety of different incisions. The procedure may be combined with others such as a breast lift for more satisfying results. Implants are silicone shells filled with saline (salt water) or silicone gel that are placed behind each breast. The procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed with general anesthesia. After surgery the patient's bustline may be increased by one or more cup sizes.

With age, pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuations, the female breast can become deflated and saggy looking. A breast lift procedure provides a way to move breast tissue into a much more youthful position. The procedure is often combined with a breast augmentation to restore lost breast volume and cleavage. This allows for a return to a more youthful profile for your chest. Any breast tissue that is removed during the surgical procedure is sent for pathological exam to rule out the presence of undetected cancer.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is usually done to provide relief from symptoms caused by large, heavy breasts. Performed under general anesthesia, the two- to four-hour procedure removes fat and glandular tissue and tightens skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body. Most patients experience immediate improvement in the symptoms caused by their oversized breasts. This procedure is covered by most health insurance plans if a certain minimal amount of breast tissue is removed. All breast tissue removed is sent for pathological examination to rule out the presence of undetected cancer.

Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy or Trauma

Breast reconstruction allows for restoration of the breast mound after removal of the breast for cancer or disfigurement due to trauma. Abdominal tissue, back tissue, and/or implants can be used to recreate a breast mound. The procedure can be performed immediately after mastectomy or in a delayed fashion depending on the patient's other medical concerns (chemotherapy, radiation, etc.) Multiple surgeries are often needed before the reconstruction is completed. Breast reconstruction is a procedure covered by most insurance programs.
