With pregnancy or weight loss, the abdominal wall will often become draped with excess skin, stretch marks, and loose muscles. A tummy tuck is designed to remove excess skin and fat of the abdominal wall and tighten loose abdominal muscles. The incision is made low in the bikini line area to better hide it. Restrictions in lifting and exercise last for approximately 4 weeks.
Excess fat is deposited in defined areas of the face, neck, arms, trunk, buttocks, and legs. For people who are generally in good shape but have been unable to improve certain areas of their bodies despite adequate exercise and good nutrition, liposuction can be used to sculpt these areas. A mixture of saline (salt water), lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (adrenaline) is used to emulsify the fat prior to removal. The fat is removed using variously sized steel cannulas attached to suction. We offer standard liposuction, PAL (power assisted liposuction), and VASER™ LipoSelection. This is generally an outpatient procedure.
Weight gain, puberty, medication usage, and abuse of illegal substances, amongst other things, can cause overenlargement of the male breast. This can be a source of shame and ridicule for many young and adult males. Gynecomastia repair involves a combination of liposuction and excision of breast tissue from under the areola to recontour the breast. If breast tissue is removed, it is always sent for pathologic exam to rule out the presence of undetected cancer. If you should elect, we can submit a request to your insurance company to have this condition covered. Gynecomastia repair is often combined with liposuction of the abdomen and flanks ("love handles") to improve the overall appearance of the male trunk.
The number of morbidly obese Americans is at a crisis level. This fact has been the fuel to drive increasing numbers of patients to seek surgical remedies for their obesity. The gastric bypass operation and the lap-band procedure are the most popular. These procedures often result in rapid, large-scale weight loss. The result is usually large amounts of excess skin that can often become symptomatic. Body contouring procedures such as brachioplasty ("arm lift"), body lift, buttocks lift, and thigh lift can be performed to improve proportions. Breast and facial procedures round out the rejuvenation process. The scars left by these operations are much larger than other cosmetic procedures, but most weight loss patients will gladly exchange their excess skin for scars and a better fit to their clothes. The complication rates for body contouring after massive weight loss are also higher due to nutrition restrictions imposed by the surgery itself, so we pay close attention to your pre- and post-operative diet.
